THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS FOR CHILDREN.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS FOR CHILDREN.

You have probably heard the stastics about how people fear public speaking more than almost anything else. It can definitely be terrifying to get up in front of a crowd of people and try to captivate them with your words. Being able to speak confidently in front of a group of people is a valuable skill, though. Since children tend to be a little more fearless and open to new experiences than adults, they often do well in public speaking programs and get a lot out of them.

At GIANT LEAPS Speech + Drama we offer classes that help children develop as public speakers, and we think these programs can work wonders for children in terms of boosting their self-confidence levels and teaching them new skills. In particular, public speaking programs can offer your child the following:

1. Improved Communication Skills

A big part of successful public speaking is communicating ideas clearly and well. Being a clear communicator takes practice. Public speaking programs give children plenty of opportunities to practice putting their ideas into words. Children that enrol in our public speaking programs learn a new sense of how to get their own unique, valuable messages across to the world.

2. Increased Self-Esteem

As previously mentioned, one of the major advantages of public speaking for children is that it can boost their self-confidence levels. Getting up in front of a group of people can be incredibly intimidating, but once a child does it, he or she often feels a great sense of pride for overcoming a fear.

3. Planning Experience

Many children don’t develop good planning skills until they’re adolescents. This has to do partly with the way our brains develop and partly to do with the fact that children are told how to spend their time and what action to take most of the time. Public speaking requires that children plan and prepare. In turn, it allows them to work on thinking ahead, a skill that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.

4. The Power of Persuasion

The main goal of a speech is to convince the audience of something. Public speaking programs teach children persuasive skills. One of the most important things leaders know how to do is persuade others. Once children develop this ability, the sky is the limit in terms of the beneficial influence they can have on others.

As part of  our public speaking programme, students are asked to make speeches or presentations in front of their classmates and teacher. Many children find the prospect of speaking in front of a group of people to be quite nerve-wracking. It has even been suggested that the reason why so many adults have a fear of public speaking is because they never learned how to feel comfortable in front of a crowd as a child.
