Public Speaking for TEENS
In Public Speaking classes students will learn specific methods and strategies to give them the confidence they need to speak effectively in public. Students will improve their ability to persuade and convince others and think quickly and clearly under pressure. Strong communication skills help young people to succeed in a world that demands confidence, articulation and the ability to communicate ideas clearly. Public Speaking classes will prepare students to excel in school, attain their dream jobs, express their opinions and become future leaders in their schools and communities.
In our classes, students will develop superior vocal skills (articulation, projection, modulation), body language (posture, eye contact) and speaking skills (impromptu, social and prepared speeches) to give powerful, purposeful and effective presentations suited to any audience and occasion!

Classes
Students are placed in small groups with similar aged peers. Lessons are 30 - 40 minutes in duration and occur on a weekly basis over the school term. During our classes students will work on....
- Communicating with ease - interpersonal and formal.
- Fighting stage fright and speaking in front of large audience
- Speech structure and preparation and delivery
- Increasing vocabulary
- Using words seamlessly
- Controlling pauses and fillers (ahs and umhs)
- Basic principles of a formal debating
- Using gestures and body language - how best to use them effectively in your speech
- Speaking enthusiastically and projecting your voice
- The effectiveness of tone, volume, variety in voice during a speech
- Special session on participating in debates
Examinations offered in partnership with
Students will be encouraged to participate in Speech NZ Public Speaking examinations. Exams are optional, but highly recommended. They are a fantastic feature of our Public Speaking programme. Exams provide a goal for each student to work toward and give students a concrete measure of their achievement.
Classes offered at over fifteen venues
GIANT LEAPS Public Speaking classes are offered Monday - Friday at many different venues in and around Timaru, Waimate and Oamaru. Our classes are offered in some local high schools during school hours and we also run after-school classes. Click here to find a class near you!
